How to Calculate Zakat on Mixed 22K/24K Gold, Cash, and Crypto in 2026

Quick answer

To calculate zakat on mixed gold, cash and crypto: convert every asset to today's cash value, add them together, and if the total meets or exceeds your chosen nisab threshold, pay 2.5% of the total. Crypto is treated the same as cash for zakat purposes — its live market value on your zakat due date is what counts, not what you paid for it.

Most zakat questions aren't about the 2.5% rate itself — that part is fixed and well known. The hard part is combining assets that don't share a unit: grams of 22K gold, grams of 24K gold, cash sitting in a bank account, and crypto priced in USD. The fix is the same for all four: convert everything to one currency, at today's value, then add.

Step 1 — Value your gold by purity, not by weight alone

22K gold is 91.67% pure and 24K is 99.9% pure, so a gram of each is worth a different amount even at the identical spot price. Multiply each gold holding's weight by its karat purity, then by the live gold spot rate, to get each holding's real cash value — don't just add the grams together first. The Gold & Jewellery Calculator does this purity adjustment automatically if you'd rather not do it by hand.

Step 2 — Add cash, savings, and crypto at today's value

Cash and bank savings are already in currency, so they add in directly. Crypto is valued the same way — its current market price on your zakat due date, converted to your currency, regardless of your original purchase price or unrealized gains/losses. Use a live converter to get an accurate crypto-to-cash figure at the moment you calculate.

Step 3 — Check the total against your chosen nisab

Nisab is the minimum wealth threshold below which zakat isn't due at all. Two standards are in common use — see the table below. The silver standard gives a lower threshold and is the one most commonly recommended for mixed cash-and-metal holdings, since it means zakat reaches more people in need; the gold standard is sometimes preferred for gold-only holdings.

Zakat nisab thresholds

StandardThresholdTypically used for
Silver standard612.36 grams of silverMixed cash, gold, silver and crypto holdings
Gold standard87.48 grams of goldGold-only holdings

Formula used:

Zakat Due = 2.5% × (Gold Value + Silver Value + Cash + Crypto Value − Short-Term Debts), if total ≥ Nisab

Worked example

  • 50 grams of 22K gold at a live spot rate → converted to cash value at 91.67% purity
  • 20 grams of 24K gold at the same live spot rate → converted at 99.9% purity
  • Cash & savings: added directly, no conversion needed
  • Crypto holdings: converted to cash at today's market price
  • Sum everything, subtract any short-term debts due, compare to your chosen nisab — if at or above it, multiply the total by 2.5%

Rather than tracking live gold and silver rates by hand, the Zakat Calculator runs this exact calculation for you with live rates, and lets you toggle between the gold and silver nisab standards instantly.

FAQs

Zakat is based on your crypto's current market value on your zakat due date, not your cost basis — so unrealized gains are included in that current value, and unrealized losses reduce it, automatically.
