Non-Farm Payrolls & News Trading
Why one jobs report moves every USD pair
The US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report, released monthly, measures the change in the number of employed people in the US (excluding farm workers, government employees, and a few other categories). It's one of the most closely watched economic releases because employment data feeds directly into the Federal Reserve's policy decisions — strong jobs growth can support a case for tighter policy, weak growth the opposite.
What makes news trading uniquely risky
In the seconds/minutes around a high-impact release, spreads can widen dramatically, price can spike violently in both directions before settling, and slippage on stop-losses can be far worse than normal. This is a fundamentally different risk environment from regular trading hours.
- Actual vs. Forecast vs. Previous: markets react most to how the ACTUAL figure compares to the FORECAST (consensus expectation), not the raw number alone.
- A big "beat" (actual well above forecast) is typically currency-positive; a big "miss" is typically currency-negative — but initial moves can reverse quickly.
- Volatility often spikes for a short window then can reverse or extend unpredictably — this is not a time for casual position sizing.
Pro Tip
Many experienced traders deliberately avoid opening NEW positions in the minutes immediately around high-impact news, specifically because of the spread-widening and slippage risk — not because the move isn't real, but because the risk-to-reward of trading the initial spike is often poor.
