What is a pip?

A "pip" (Percentage In Point) is the standard smallest meaningful price increment for most forex pairs — typically the 4th decimal place (e.g., EUR/USD moving from 1.0850 to 1.0851 is a 1-pip move). Yen pairs are the main exception, since they're quoted to only 2 decimal places, making the 2nd decimal the pip (e.g., USD/JPY 150.25 to 150.26).

Lot sizes: how much you're actually trading

A "lot" is a standardized trade size. A Standard Lot is 100,000 units of the base currency; a Mini Lot is 10,000 units (1/10th); a Micro Lot is 1,000 units (1/100th). The lot size you trade directly determines how much money each pip movement is worth to you.

  • Standard Lot = 100,000 units → roughly $10/pip on most USD-quoted pairs
  • Mini Lot = 10,000 units → roughly $1/pip
  • Micro Lot = 1,000 units → roughly $0.10/pip
  • Exact pip value varies slightly by pair and by your account's quote currency.

Key Formula / Concept — Approximate Pip Value (USD-quoted pairs)

Pip Value ≈ (Lot Size × Pip Size) in quote currency

For a standard lot (100,000 units) on a pair quoted to 4 decimals, 1 pip (0.0001) × 100,000 = $10 per pip. Micro lot (1,000 units) → $0.10 per pip.

Pro Tip

Beginners blow up accounts far more often from oversized lots than from being "wrong" about direction. A correct trade with a lot size too large for your account can still wipe you out on a normal pullback.

Standard Lot100,000 units ≈ $10/pip
Mini Lot10,000 units ≈ $1/pip
Micro Lot1,000 units ≈ $0.10/pip
The same 1-pip price move is worth very different amounts depending on your lot size.

Try it: enter your account balance, risk %, and stop-loss distance to get a suggested lot size.

Lot Size ≈ (Account Balance × Risk %) ÷ (Stop-Loss Pips × Pip Value per Lot)

Risk Amount: $100

Suggested Lot Size: 0.5 standard lots

Pip value per lot varies by currency pair and account currency — $10/pip for a standard lot is typical for USD-quoted pairs, but always check your broker's actual figure before sizing a real trade. For informational/educational purposes only, not financial advice.
